Welcome to Municipality of Concepcion

History

  • Spanish Colonial Era (1860โ€“1898):
Originally part of San Bartolome, Concepcion emerged after a great flood in 1863 forced residents to resettle. One group founded Magalang, while another settled in what became Concepcion, named after the Immaculate Conception. By 1897, the Katipunan under General Servillano Aquino was active in the town.

  • American Colonial Era (1900โ€“1941):
The first American government was set up in 1902. The town saw progress with schools, a municipal building, bandstands, and the town plaza (later named Benigno Aquino Sr. Memorial Park).

  • Japanese Occupation (1942โ€“1945):
The Japanese established garrisons, leading to violence and resistance by guerrillas and Hukbalahap. Liberation came in 1945, and the Commonwealth government was restored.

  • Post-war Era (1946โ€“1980s):
Educational and civic institutions expanded, and Ninoy Aquino became the youngest mayor at 22 in 1955. Infrastructure such as hospitals, bridges, and water/electric cooperatives grew. The 1980s were marked by Ninoy Aquinoโ€™s assassination and Corazon Aquinoโ€™s rise to the presidency.

  • Natural Calamities (1990โ€“1992):
The 1990 Luzon earthquake and 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption caused devastation, with evacuees resettled in Camp Oโ€™Donnell.

  • Contemporary Period (2000sโ€“present):
The town experienced economic growth with new schools, malls, banks, and infrastructure projects. Leadership shifted between Benjamin Lacson, Noel Villanueva, and Andres Lacson. Cultural pride was highlighted through events like the Belenismo ng Tarlac competition.
